Highbury Park’s Ecological Value Recognised

Birmingham City Council approves Local Sites Assessment for Highbury Park.

We are delighted to share that Birmingham City Council has approved the Local Sites Assessment for Highbury Park.

In 2021, Andy Slater from Birmingham and Black Country Wildlife Trust and Ellen Pisolkar, Ecologist and Highbury Park Friends member, prepared and submitted a Local Sites Assessment to Birmingham City Council. The assessment recognises the whole Park and Estate as candidates for designation as a Site of Importance for Nature Conservation (SINC) and Site of Local Importance for Nature Conservation (SLINC).

The assessment highlights Highbury Park’s exceptional diversity of habitats, including meadows, woodland, hedgerows, wetlands, ponds and streams, and the wide range of plants and wildlife they support. It recommends that the most ecologically valuable areas are designated as Site of Importance for Nature Conservation, with the remainder designated as Site of Local Importance for Nature Conservation.

This is an important step in recognising the natural heritage of Highbury Park and helping to inform its future care and conservation.
